This wasn’t a dream anymore, she was back at Julliard, only it was the summer program that she had attended, she was on stage preparing for a recital, the same practice that when the lights hit her, she choked, then fell. She could feel the bright lights on her, she was sweating in both the dream and real life, her breathing began to get heavier until she was no longer able to breath. She was gasping for air, trying to get anything, when she suddenly woke up, sitting straight up, taking in as much air as she could, letting out a loud gasp. Now breathing heavily, she was more or less panting as she looked around, wondering where she was. She knew it wasn’t her room. Then she spotted him. Everything came back and she remembered. Crap. Quickly thinking in her mind she knew she had to come up with some excuse as to her behavior. She could see the worried look on Ryans face, bless his heart. Half smiling at Ryan, Codie tried to explain. ”Its okay, im alright, it was just one of those stupid dreams where you find yourself falling, only this time I was at the top of a volcano and I fell in, only it didn’t stop, I just kept falling and falling.” Realizing that the movie was now done, Codie smiled. ”Shall we go to Steak N Shake now?” Before standing up, Codie rubbed her ankle to make sure that it was okay still, then looked down and realized she was in her pajama shorts and tank. Ryan had just finished bringing the popcorn back into the room now clean when he noticed Codie breathing heavily. He knew she was having a nightmare, and bent down and tried to gently shake her awake. "Codie," he called. As she sat up, he took a step back to give her room to breathe. He gave her a concerned look. "Are you alright?" he asked. When Codie said that she was okay and described her dream, something felt off about the entire thing. While she brushed it off as nothing, Ryan could tell in her eyes that something else had happened. But he let it slide when she changed the subject to Steak N Shake and nodded. "I'm ready when you're reading." Ryan looked down however when she pointed out they were in pajamas. "Right," he muttered with a sheepish chuckle. "You know, I think I'll just throw on a hoodie and some shoes and call it done," he said as he went to his closet and pulled out a grey hoodie and threw it over his head. "If you want to change and meet back here in five minutes, go ahead," he said, sitting on his bed and pulling his Converses to him. She knew that he wasn’t buying her story she told about the dream, she felt awful for lying to him, she just hoped he couldn’t read that. She wanted to tell him everything, it just didn’t feel right yet, everything was still new and fresh, maybe after steak n shake, depending on how things went. When Ryan grabbed a hoodie and threw it on over she chuckled, glad to see that he was so chill about things. Giggling, Codie went over to his closet and pulled out another hoodie. She slid it on over her tank, letting it fall down to the bottom of her shorts. Shaking her head she laughed, ”It looks like I have nothing on, this won’t do.” Pulling her shorts down a little farther, she knew the top of her underwear was showing underneath the hoodie, but she didn’t plan on anyone looking up it. ”There that’s much better. I’m ready to go if you wont be too embarrassed to be seen with this mess.” Codie smiled as she struck a pose in his hoodie and her low shorts. Curtsying at Ryan, she only let a few giggles come out as she linked her arm around his. ”Ready. Lead the way kind sir.” She couldn’t believe she was playing along with the accent. She was thankful that there was no one else there, she’d never be able to live it down, and her chances of even becoming remotely popular would be out the window. She did love that she could completely be herself with Ryan without being judged. If was willing to be seen in public with her dressed like she was, she had just realized that she could trust him with anything. She smiled as she followed him to Steak N Shake, staying close to his side. She had decided that later that she would tell him everything. Ryan was so happy that she went along with his accent. When she linked her arm with his, he tried not to turn into a teenager who had just gotten his first kiss and led her out of the dorm. He shut his door and locked it quickly, and keeping Codie's arm linked with his, headed down the block to Steak N Shake. "If I only had a top hat and cane, and you in a floor length dress, we could have some serious fun with this whole accent thing," he commented with a grin. The walk was about five minutes, and Ryan was thankful it was a 24/7 place. Most of the restaurants in the area were for the college students. Even though it was only 10, it felt so much later as Ryan led Codie to a booth. "Here we are, kind madam," he said with a clumsy bow. Trying to act cool and not draw too much attention to what she just said, she followed along, and sat down when he led her to the booth. Taking the menu from the waitress she began to look over and realized that it hadn’t changed much. ”Wow, this still looks just like it did in high school.” Setting her menu down she slid it off to the side. She didn’t know why she even bothered looking at the menu, she always got the same thing. Smiling at Ryan, she looked at the waitress when she returned. ”I’ll have cheese fries and a chocolate shake, can I get an extra whipped cream and a cherry with that?” She smiled sweetly at the accommodating waitress then looked to Ryan for his order. Ryan glanced at Codie when she said the word date and actually smiled. He could tell she hadn't meant to say it and decided to let it slide. He would bring it up before the end of the night. Though he prided himself in spontaneous actions, sometimes he liked the planning of things. When Codie ordered, his eyes brightened at the mention. "Actually, that sounds amazing," he said. "I'll take the same." As the waitress walked away, a scene from one of his favorite musicals popped to mind and he started to laugh. "Wow, that was just like the scene in Grease when Danny orders and Sandy orders the same, only gender-reversed," he commented before Codie thought he was a complete nut. A few minutes later, the waitress brought out two large milkshakes in perfection to their order. He thanked her as she walked away and lifted his glass to Codie. Leaning over she grabbed Ryan’s hands and brought them to the center of the table. Still holding his hands she smiled as she hid behind the menu. ”Well Danny, are you planning on ditching me at the dance for Cha-cha?” She asked with smile. When the waitress brought their milkshakes out and Ryan lifted his glass, she did the same and nodded in agreement to his mini speech. ”Making it much better than ever.” she added with a smile, clink, and a sip from the side. Setting the glass down on the table, she could feel the whipped cream on her nose. Giggling she tried to lick it off with her tongue, but was managing to miss some of the cream. "I would never dream of ditching you for anybody else, Codes," he said. As they took sips of their milkshakes, Ryan chuckled softly seeing Codie covered in the whipped cream. When she attempted to lick it off but missed, he picked up at napkin. "You missed a spot, just right..." he leaned over and wiped it off gently. "There." He looked into her eyes and smiled. "Beautiful," he said softly and would have just taken the chance to lean closer to her had their food not arrived at that exact moment. He sat back in his seat and thanked the waitress again and looked at the pile of cheese fries in front of he and Codie. "This. Looks. Amazing," he commented with a huge smile. Staring at the gooey goodness she smiled at Ryan before digging into the fries. ”Best.Night.Ever. I can’t imagine anything better than this…” Taking one of the cheese covered fries in her hand she placed it in her mouth and enjoyed every minute of it, watching Ryan do the same. In between bites she took the opportunity to get the head start. She wasn’t quite ready to talk about herself, not in a public place like this anyway, so she tried to get him talking. ”So, what have you been up to since high school. As Ryan and Codie toasted and Ryan took a sip of his drink, he pretended to melt into his seat. "I think that's the best milkshake I've had here. No lie," he said with a grin, sitting back up and looking over at Codie. He chuckled at her when she said it was the best night ever and was absorbed into her plate of fries. He looked down at his own and picked up a couple and took a bite. It was pure heaven. He always got the same thing at Steak N Shake until now. "Oh. My. God. These are amazing," he said, picking up a few more and dunking them into the little cup of ranch dressing on the side. When Codie asked him what he'd been doing, he looked at her. "I thought that was supposed to be my line," he said jokingly. "In all honesty, trying avoid home as much as possible. You remember how everybody in town were. I went to a few competitions, won awards and all of a sudden it was like a celebrity moved in. I didn't like it. I just wanted to have a normal summer before college and well...after you left, things just got crazy. After you left, so did the others in a group. All to Los Angeles, or New York. I actually moved down here a month before orientation with my aunt. I wanted to be away and be a nobody for once." He shook his head and took a long sip of his shake before popping another fry in his mouth and chewing it. After he swallowed, he looked at Codie. "What about you, Codes?" he asked. Blegh.” She stuck her tongue out in a ‘disgusted’ face before smiling at him. It was true though, people always made the strangest combinations with food. Continuing to enjoy her fries, she listened as Ryan talked. She could understand his frustration with the town, and knew exactly what he meant by getting away. When he said be a nobody, Codie looked at him in shock. She knew he was famous in the small town, but how could he want to be a nobody? ”Ryan, you could never be a nobody. You’ll always be somebody to someone.”She said with a smile before feeling her stomach jump when he asked about her. Looking around nervously at the other people in the resteraunt, she didn’t want anyone to overhear. She just couldn’t tell him the whole truth here. ”Well, I wanted to get away from things, start fresh more or less so I went to uh visit some family, then found this university online and decided to give it a try.” Looking down at her plate, she pushed it toward the edge of the table. ”Nothing to interesting.” She felt horrible about not telling the whole truth, it had been wearing her down for months and now she had the opportunity to let it all out, and here she was chickening out. It touched him and he could just hope that maybe she would be that somebody. As she answered his question, he felt like something was off about Codie. As she avoided his gaze, Ryan couldn’t help but wonder if she were telling the truth or not. He just wanted her to be honest with him. “Nice,” he said with a nod, knowing that when they were in the comfort of their dorm hall once more, he was going to give her a chance to open up once more. She was thankful that Ryan wasn’t too much bigger than she was, just big enough to make his hoodie comfortable. Really comfortable in fact, the thought of snatching it came to her mind. Trying her best to smile at Ryan, she looked over at him, desperately wanting the awkwardness to go away. When the waitress came back to their table, Codie reached for her purse, then patted her sides, and remembered that she was in her pj’s and had no money on her. Looking over at Ryan she gave him an ‘I’m sorry’ look. ”I totally forgot my wallet, I forgot I was in my pj’s. I’m sorry” This day kept getting worse and worse. First she had to not tell the truth, now she had no money, what else was going to go wrong. She could feel the tears starting to form, she knew that eventually they were going to start falling, she just hoped they waited til she was in the privacy of her own dorm.
